Directory Submissions Pages
When this page was written many years ago (before the rise of Google) it gave detailed directions on how to submit a website to dozens of directories. For a while during its growth into the monster it is today, Google checked various directories to see if there was a link from within a directory category to a website, as part of their ranking algorithm. As this became common knowledge, a bazillion directories sprang up asking to be paid for inclusion of a listing. Within a couple of years, Google stopped caring whether a site was listed in a directory, because people gamed that system.
The big online directories (think ODP and Yahoo) are almost all gone now, and Google and Bing are the only two English language search engines left worth worrying about in 2024. Focus on optimizing your website for Google and good results at Bing will happen as a natural consequence. You don't need to submit your site to any directories, but it doesn't do any harm, either.
